Research and Development

HCC aims to develop profitable and sustainable markets for Welsh red meat. We therefore consider research and development (R&D) to be a core activity to improve the efficiency of the red meat sector in Wales.

Most farming businesses are restricted by the cost of R&D, which often comes with a high priced tag. Whilst it may be beyond the capabilities of any individual livestock producer to develop their own programme, HCC can enable Welsh farming businesses to obtain access to essential research projects by bringing collective resources to the benefit of the whole industry.

HCC's R&D STRATEGY

When R&D projects are of benefit to the UK industry as a whole, HCC collaboratively fund alongside EBLEX (English Beef and Lamb Executive), QMS (Quality Meat Scotland), BPEX (British Pig Executive) and LMC (the Livestock and Meat Commission for Northern Ireland).

HCC’s R&D strategy outlines the objectives for R&D in the Welsh red meat industry, and ‘headline’ areas for research include:

  • Genetic improvement
  • Traceability
  • Animal Health
  • Nutrition - animal and human
  • Product quality and safety
  • Socio-economics and environmental issues
