Farm facts
The farm business comprises of four partners, Mr HP Evans, Mrs GA Evans, Mr RH Evans and MrWP Evans
The organic, all grassland farm is made up of several units, extending to:
- 320 acre home farm
- 1,000 acres of open mountain, Pennantigi Uchaf.
- 25 acres rented on short term tenancy at Meifod.
- 140 acres rented at nearby Centre of Alternative Technology.
- 459 acres rented on fbt near Llannon Ceredigion.
- 121 acres rented on short term tenancy
Total of 2065 acres / 835ha
Current livestock numbers are;
Beef
- 180 suckler cows calving during spring and summer comprising of 40 pure BB
- 115 suckler stores over wintered and sold at about 14 months.
- 40 heifers retained for breeding.
- 15 pedigree bulls sold for breeding.
Sheep
- 541 Welsh ewes breeding pure and to Lleyn rams rearing 94%.
- 1460 Lleyn cross ewes to Texel rams rearing 150%, lambs sold on contract to Waitrose and some retained.
- 400 lambs are retained annually.
Main objectives:
- Increase flock efficiency - targeting carcase weights.
- Increase suckler efficiency - calving periods (calving heifers) targeting output..
- Target feeding regime for weaned sucklers.-sale weights/dates
- Silage storage
Planning to:
- Introduce high indexed rams to hill flock, to increase carcass weight and ewe performance
- EID for suckler herd to record cow performance
- Review sire values (bulls and Sheep).
- Bench mark all systems (already planned, further to farm plan)
- Introduce dirty water control/ slurry spreading over home farm area.
- Silage analysis and feed planning.
