G4ce

A new project has been launched to help farmers get the most out of their grass.

The project - G4ce - is a joint venture between the Grassland Development Centre and Meat Promotion Wales (HCC).

A key message of the project is "Use it or lose it!"

The initiative will involve two Farming Connect Red Meat Development Demonstration Farms who will measure and record the growth of grass.

Also, the project is looking for two other farms to join the project.

The measurement and recording of information is analyzed and used to manage grazing in order to reduce costs.

LATEST UPDATE

Richard Rogers of Bodrida Demonstration Farm, Anglesey has been using a rising plate meter, and a quad mounted sonic plate meter.

The latter is a GPS guided plate meter, which takes up to 10 grass height measurements per second, and use a wireless connection to the farm office computer, to provide accurate readings on grass growth as often as you want them, specific to each field.

Using the sonic meter, and carrying out analysis of his grass, has enables Richard to keep a closer eye on his grass growth, and how he can expect it to perform; for more information on his grass growth readings, click here.
